What It Takes To Be DJ In 2010

DJ Techtools (www.djtechtools.com) recently published a very informative blog about what it takes to be a DJ in an overly saturated industry (thanks serato!) and how we, as DJs, need to be more business savvy than ever. It's definitely not about the music and skill anymore, it's all about branding and how many people you can bring. Quite sad I think.

My personal favorite portion of the article mentions how being able to "Read The Crowd" is now a special skill needed in order to sell yourself. I find it sad that this skill is now considered a "bonus" rather than a requirement as a DJ. It took me years to figure out just how to read a crowd and feel what kind of music they would respond to. When all your break tracks with "put your hands up" runs out and doesn't work, how are you going to hype up the crowd and keep them on the dance floor? What happens when that banger playlist you put together the night before doesn't work? Just something to think about if you're just starting up.

The Lighting Factor by DJ Goose

Ever been to a bar or club with your boys, then you see this "hot" girl and you guys start rating her on a scale of 1 to 10? And then when you see the same girl outside, at the end of the night under "brighter" lights, your rating either goes up a notch or worse, down. Admit it, you've done it. Ladies, I know you do it to us guys too.

Well, years ago, DJ Goose actually solved this weird shift in the scale. Goose realized that this shift is caused by what he coined as "The Lighting Factor". During those inebriated moments of "I think she's a 6" or "She looks like a 7 to me", what we don't take into account is how light affects vision and thus produces an error in our scale judgement. Here's a direct quote from Goose's blog dated April 2004.

Have you ever heard of the Lighting Factor???..It was kinda dark in this joint. We will call this girl I was talking to "L-boogie". Anyways, I couldn't really tell what this girl looked like. I can tell she was slender and about my height tho. From what I can tell, she looked like an average girl. The four of us went outside to the patio to look for the birthday boy. When I saw her in the light...wow!!..Her lighting factor is about 1.25!!. Which means if I thought she was a "6" inside.. then her marking in the light is 6*1.25 which equals a "7.5"!!! Typically if a girl is "6" inside the club and when the light turns out she turns out to be "4", then her lighting factor is 0.67. I know it sounds means but I know girls rate guys as well!!

Genius! Now, depending on the lighting inside the venue, you can rate your eye candy properly! Thank you DJ Goose!

Please come and join us this Saturday at Mountain Bar to celebrate a milestone for Sound Science DJ's. One year ago, Sound Science was an idea thrown around by DJ Goose, DJ Orbit and DJ Surreal to put together a group with the same goals that would help and support each other in an overly saturated dj industry. A group for DJ's, by DJ's.

Now, with five members strong and partnered with Platinum Club LA, Sound Science has gained momentum and is slowly getting known within the industry.

To show our appreciation, we are bringing you a special event that showcases the talents of the friends we've made through this first year. The Fighting Cocks will be performing in the 2nd floor followed by progressive house music brought to you by our friend, Ken Onozawa. DJ Goose!!!: Just to Listen Mix Series!

So back in late 2006 I decided to buy Serato Scratch Live. I was undecided if I should buy it or not. I was always worried about latency especially in regards to scratching and trick-mixing. But when I saw the Beat Junkies using it, I made up my mind. I said to myself "if these guys are using it..it must be good!" Anyhow the Beat Junkies are my greatest influences (but that's another post).

Not until February 2007 did I really get into using the program. I decided that I would make a mix each weeknight (if I were home)so I could jam to it in the car and also to get used to the program. I really just needed to have some mixes in my ipod since I wasn't really feeling radio music.

These mixes are all the way live with no edits. I'm guaranteeing there are mess-ups and such. Also I would like to point out majority of these mixes were made using Absolute mode in Scratch Live. It took me awhile to use Relative mode which I am currently using. So here's my first mix I recorded using the program. Hope it gets your head nodding!!.....
